Some years ago I was introduced to The Regex Coach, by a poor guy who's main work function was to write large, complex, regular expressions for multiple vendor log files (think 20 kilobytes of regexp's, per vendor!).
Anyway it runs on Windows and Linux, and features free form regexp window, a target data window, and selection highlighting. An example is below.
