Last month I finally gave in to The Devil and signed up for TPG Internet's ADSL2+ service.
Once active, the first thing I did was to do a speed test to verify their throughput claims.
As I am located in Sydney, Australia, I choose a test against a Sydney mirror (it was not hosted by TPG). Here is the result:

My first result
According to TPG:- "20%, 50%, 70% of these ADSL2+ customers are achieving speeds of approximately 20Mbps, 15Mbps and 10Mbps respectively. Actual speeds achieved will vary due to a number of factors including distance from the local telephone exchange, network configuration and traffic, the quality of the customer.s copper phone line, EMI, cabling and equipment."
Yet 4750kbps download is nowhere near the advertised speed! The upload is limited to 1Mbps, so 798kbps is close enough.
After reading a few other ADSL2 user posts, I grabbed a copy of Dr TCP (I could directly modify the registry, but I'm awful lazy these days) and changed my settings as shown below:
Windows versions prior to Vista were configured to operate under slower network speeds and comply to strict standard TCP. Since then, much has changed - but Windows hasn't.
You must now reboot for the changes to activate. After reboot, I retried the Sydney SpeedTest. Here is the result:
My second result with TCP/IP tweaks
A 3X improvement! With a quick reboot. I am now able to download a 40MB file in about 28 seconds. I could probably tweak it a little more, but that's fast enough for the moment.
